Questions to ask your doctor about your ED

By talking to your doctor about your ed or impotence you can both decide which is the treatment option that best suits you and your partner.

Here are some questions that might be helpful when you are talking to your doctor about ED or impotence:
  • What tests do I need for the evaluation of my ED / impotence?
  • Can sexual activity impose any health risks for me?
  • What treatment options are available?
  • What is the effectiveness of the various treatment choices?
  • What are the potential side effects of the various treatment options?
  • If my partner also has a sexual problem, what should I (we) do?

If your doctor suggests a medication, here are some questions that might help you understand more about the treatment:
  • Can I take my ED medication with food or alcohol?
  • How frequently can I use the treatment?
  • Can my ED treatment interact or interfere with other medications I'm taking now or might take in the future?
  • What precautions should I take when using ED treatments?
  • For how long does the ED medication work?

Also, be sure to tell your doctor:
  • If you have ever had any heart problems, such as angina, chest pains, heart failure, irregular heartbeats, or a heart attack, especially within the last 90 days
  • If you have ever had a stroke
  • If you have ever had high or low blood pressure
  • If you have ever had a severe kidney problem
  • If you have ever had a severe liver problem
  • If you have any allergies
  • If you have a deformed penis, Peyronie's disease (a curvature of the penis due to formation of scar tissue), or ever had an erection that lasted longer than 4 hours
  • About any and all medications, prescription, non-prescription or herbal you are taking. If you are prescribed a prescription medication for your ED your doctor needs to be aware of any possible interactions.

You may also want to ask your doctor these questions:
  • Is there any underlying medical cause for my ED?
  • Could any of my medicines be causing this problem or making it worse?
  • If so, can I safely change my medicines or their doses?
  • Could stress or other psychological problems be contributing to my erection difficulties?
  • Should I see a counsellor, a sex therapist or a psychiatrist?
  • Which ED treatments might work for me?
  • If so, how can I take it safely, and what side effects should I look for?
  • How much improvement can I expect?
  • Should I consider surgery? If so, what are the procedures and what are the advantages and disadvantages?
  • Could vacuum devices or implants help? What are the pros and cons of these options?
